Family is important. Much is said in Scripture about family and lineage, so it's important to God as well. It is our link to the past, to who we are and to those who (literally) made it possible for us to be on this earth...and we all should have a desire to know more about our roots. That's what this Reunion will do...you will have an opportunity to learn more about your heritage and meet and fellowship with relatives you may have never met before. I'm grateful for those who are working hard to make it successful.
I really never got to know three of my four grandparents. My grandfather on my mother's side died before I was born, and I barely remember her mother ("Mama Brock"). My father's dad (Cal) died when I was a young child, and I have faint memories of him, except for a short period of time when he lived with us prior to going to a nursing home. I was seven years old when he died. I do have many fond memories of "Mama Davis" (Hattie) and was an adult when she died. Our trio (The Davis Trio) sung at her funeral in Cedartown.
Fortunately, my grandkids know and have had many interactions with ALL FOUR of their grandparents, and even great grandparents. Their great grandmother (on their mother's side) is still living, and they get to visit with her on a regular basis in Virginia, where most of them live.
Yes, family is important. I taught my daughters the importance of family, and ALL FIVE of them, their husbands and children (my 19 grandkids) are planning to make the trip from Virginia to Georgia to meet and fellowship with the "Davis" side of their lineage. Yes, it will be a lot of trouble, and yes, it will be expensive, but all of them feel it will be worth it, and they know that there may never be another. They want their children to know their extended family and to experience what they did as kids when we held our last reunion at Camp Antioch in 1982.
Back then, it was the Jack & Mary Davis Reunion, but that generation is gone. Now, it's my brothers and my turn... along with all of our first cousins...to stand where our parents did, as the sun begins to set on our journey on this earth, and it's my children who stand where we stood over 30 years ago! Time has this funny way of marching on! :)
I know some of you simply won't be able to come, and I regret that. I wish ALL of my "Davis" relatives could attend. But to those of you who CAN come, I'm asking you put forth the effort to do so...EVEN IF IT'S JUST FOR A DAY OR AN AFTERNOON! Check out the itinerary and plug in for some or all of it. You'll be glad you did!
I'm proud of my "Davis" heritage, warts and all, and I love each and every one of you and hope to see you at Camp Antioch! Hugs will be plentiful...and the food and fellowship will be great!
Blessings,
Kayward (one of C.C.'s boys)
